I’ve Got Your Back!

Victoria Han DACM, LAc.

Why I Focus on Back Care as a Traditional Eastern Medicine (TEM) Practitioner

As an acupuncturist, one of the first things I look at when a new client comes in is their back – not just posture, but the muscle tone, tension patterns, and even the skin quality.

Why? Because your back tells a story about your stress levels, circulation, immune health, and nervous system balance.

Your Back Is Your Health Barometer

The back houses the paraspinal muscles that protect your spine and hold you upright. When these muscles are tight, they don’t just ache, they restrict blood flow and lymphatic circulation, which leads to:

•      Stiffness and pain

•      Fatigue and brain fog

•      Poor detoxification

•      Sluggish immunity

When I treat back tension, I’m not just releasing knots, I’m restoring flow. Better blood and lymph circulation means fresh oxygen and nutrients can reach your tissues, and metabolic waste can leave the body more effectively.

Calming the Autonomic Nervous System

The back is also where I can most directly influence the autonomic nervous system, especially the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) branch.
When the back muscles soften, the body gets the signal:

You are safe now. It’s okay to relax.”

This is why many people feel a wave of calm or even sleepiness after back treatments like acupuncture, cupping, or gua sha. Activating the parasympathetic system lowers stress hormones, regulates digestion, and helps the whole body shift into repair mode.

Why Regular Back Care Matters

Just like going to the gym, back maintenance works best when it’s consistent.
For most clients, I recommend:

•      Weekly or biweekly treatments if you have chronic pain or high stress

•      Monthly maintenance sessions for prevention and overall wellness

•      At-home care like gentle stretching, breathing exercises, and hot compresses between sessions

Think of it like changing the oil in your car – you wouldn’t wait until the engine fails to get maintenance. Your back deserves the same care.

My Mission: I Got Your Back

My passion for back care comes from seeing how profoundly it changes people’s lives.
When we restore flow, release tension, and calm the nervous system, people don’t just walk out with less pain – they walk out lighter, clearer, and more resilient.

So yes, I’ve really got your back.
